“Very Irresistible” is very intuitive piece. It was quilted out of all that represents female to me: from Venus to a bottle of perfume, as well as Eiffel Tower. I always think of Eiffel Tower to be a beautiful iron woman watching over my beloved Paris.
In fact it was my French friend who helped me to name the piece. Upon her visit to my studio a few weeks ago, I was showing her my new work, inquiring what she thought of it. Her reply was: “It has Givenchy all over it….Very Irresistible!”
This is what curator of the show commemorating International Women’s Day 2024 Salma Taman wrote about the piece:
“Very Irresistible" is a captivating abstract piece that explores the concept of perfection and uniqueness. The artwork is created using mixed media, predominantly featuring shades of pink and white with striking black accents and elements of collage.
The focal point of the piece is a Venus statue, symbolizing classical ideals of beauty and perfection. However, this idealized image is juxtaposed with layers of collage and abstract painting, including paper clippings from the fashion magazines and my art school flyers. These collages depict the pursuit of perfection through art and fashion.
The artwork conveys a powerful message about the nature of female perfection in our society. It suggests that while society often emphasizes the importance of appearing flawless, like Venus, it is our imperfections, like splashes of paint and texture, that truly define uniqueness and individuality. The layers of collage and the dance between perfection and imperfection in "Very Irresistible" invite viewers to reflect on their own perceptions of beauty and uniqueness.
